Gender-Inclusive Housing

First-Year Students

Gender-inclusive housing seeks to provide an environment that is welcoming to all gender identities and is not limited to the traditional gender binary (male and female). We recognize that same-sex room assignments are not ideal or appropriate for all students. We provide opportunities for students in singles in suites and apartments as well as double room housing on allgender floors. This housing option allows students to select roommates regardless of their sex, gender, or gender expression. Unless specific mutual requests are made by the roommates, Residential Life will assign students based on the standard gender binary (male/ female). The housing application includes private questions only viewable to the professional housing staff who are making the first year room assignments. Students are also welcome to reach out to the Director of Student Housing Administration with questions or to work one on one with their housing assignment.

Future Years

The University of Rochester currently provides opportunities for upperclass students to live in single bedrooms in apartments and suites in mixed groups, and also any standard double rooms and suite double rooms on coed floors in upperclass housing. This housing option allows students to select roommates regardless of their sex, gender or gender expression. Any upperclass student can select into this option during housing selection for single bedrooms in suites and apartments. For double bedrooms, upperclass students must still contact housing@reslife.rochester.edu

This option is discouraged for those students involved in an intimate/romantic relationship.
